 | 20th Jan 2004 | Bay to Breakers 2003 (13 images)
Bay to Breakers is a 12k race held every May in San Francisco. It winds across the city from the San Francisco Bay to the breakers of the Pacific Ocean. It's one of the longest running foot races in the US (first run in 1906) and it once held the record for the largest race in the world (110,000 people ran in 1986).
But Bay to Breakers isn't an ordinary foot race (is anything “ordinary” in San Francisco?). It was for a few years. Then a local San Franciscan left his running gear at home and ran the whole race in a tuxedo. People thought it was funny, and the next year a few runners wore their own silly costumes. By mid-century, there were more runners in bizarre outfits than serious sports gear. In the 70's, some runners decided they didn't need costumes, or even clothes, and started streaking through the race. Technically, public nudity is illegal, but when you're in the middle of fifty thousand clowns, cowboys, nuns and Elvises, a naked runner doesn't seem very strange.
Today, Bay to Breakers is a uniquely San Franciscan event. It's an excellent and very challenging race, a 7 mile course with some beautiful scenery, tough competition, and insanely steep hills. And it's a burst of fun and creativity that you won't find anywhere else in the world.
